Meeting Daedalus

Daedalus was a master craftsman and inventor from southern Greece. Daedalus is famous for his invention of the saw, copied from the backbone of fish. When Daedalus was young, his trainer tried to throw him down from the sacred citadel in a fit of jealousy. However, Athena changed him into a bird as he fell, saving him. His talents of quickness passed on to his wings and feet and he became a partridge.

Take a moment to make yourself comfortable. Stand in a comfortable position, or sit on the ground and adjust until you feel content and relaxed. Take a deep breath in and exhale as you close your eyes. Take another deep breath in and exhale slowly.

While you continue to breathe deeply, allow your body to relax, releasing the tension from your head and shoulders, from your arms and hands, from your chest and torso, and finally from your legs and feet. Allow that tension to flow away from your body as you relax into your position as you continue to breathe slowly and evenly.

In your mind’s eye, see yourself standing in a woodshop. Smell the fresh cut wood around you. Hear the sound of tools against boards. See the beautiful wooden creations that line the shelves along the walls. You have entered Daedalus’s workshop. In front of you stands an empty workbench. As you approach the space, Daedalus joins you. There are several options in front of you to create, with tools and materials of their own. Which item you are to create is your choice. Speak with Daedalus, let him show you the way. With his aid, create something, a gift of his teaching, in this work space.

Once your working is created, store it away in a safe place to use as needed in the future. When you are ready, take a deep breath and allow your awareness to begin to return to your body once again. Feel your awareness return to your feet and legs, up through your torso and chest. Feel the tingling of your hands and arms, and settle back in as your awareness returns to your shoulders and your head. Take one final deep breath, remembering the crafted creation you have stored away, and the gifts that Daedalus has shared with you, and then open your eyes.
