Week 15: Telemachus Returns to Ithaca

After guiding Odysseus home, Athena travels to Sparta to tell Telemachus it’s time to return home.  She warns him of the ambush that awaits him, and tells him to first go see the swineherd before going to his home.  Telemachus leaves Sparta in a chariot, eagle and goose flying overhead. He meets his ship at Pylos and sets sail toward Ithaca.  When he lands, he sees a hawk with a dove in its talons.

Working Method:  Augury

Ancient cultures often used augury to take omens from the world around them.  Telemachus saw two different sets of birds on his journey to return home. Take the time to visit a space where you can watch the birds yourself and find the messages they may have for you.
